What Is the Best Time To Journal?

While the majority of psychologists recommend journaling in the morning, you may find it not suitable for you. Different times, different gains.
So what is the best time for journaling?
If you are a morning person and can stick to writing first thing in the morning, reflect on your wins, past day, ambitions and struggles. If you have a few minutes before you go to bed, grab a pen and write a to-do list or gratitude bullet point.
What are the benefits of evening journaling?
As we live in a fast-paced world when even 10 minutes may have a huge value. We want to make the most of it. Especially when it comes to personal development.
A recent study by Scullin et al. (2018) showed that evening journaling that includes writing a specific to-do list for 5 min right before falling asleep may be more beneficial than writing about completed activities.
57 participants engaged either in a to-do list or completed list writing before polysomnography recording (a test used to diagnose sleep disorders).
Results showed that writing about future worries as a to-do list helped individuals to fall asleep faster.
Indeed, as we have a tendency to focus on the tasks we haven’t done, it may trigger negative emotions leading to tension and overthinking.
Say "Thank you" before going to sleep
Similarly, a study by Wood et al. (2008) showed that gratitude journaling before bed may reduce anxiety and overthinking via changing pre-sleep cognitions.
According to the latest studies, expressive writing can enhance your thinking, improve your well-being, and facilitate personal growth.
The key ingredient to effective journaling is your protected time — gap when you can detach from distractors and maximise your focus.

Clarity precedes mastery
If your morning routine is too full and sitting down to write for 15 min will cause you more stress, try to experiment with the evening journaling using either a to-do list approach or gratitude journaling.
The best time for narrative journaling (expressive writing) may be the time of the day when you feel most relaxed, and your brain is in an alpha brain wave state.
Right after waking up your brain shifts from delta waves (deep sleep) to theta (daydreaming), which is the ideal time for contemplation and creative work during 5–15 minutes.
Finally, brain waves transform to alpha waves when you are in a relaxed state without information overload.
Anything that “goes into” your mind during the first hour is your “blueprint” for the day. For example, when I know I have an important meeting or a presentation to give, I would journal about this for 20 min as first thing in the morning.
However, you have to be aware, that at that moment when you will be writing down your thoughts and emotions, you may experience greater arousal. But after the confrontation of your emotional release, you feel you have “emptied your mind”.
A Take-Home Message
Journaling is a free and accessible tool for everyone. Whether you are an early bird or an evening owl, you may want to explore journaling at different times of the day.
You may benefit more by writing gratitude in the evening, as it will help you to fall asleep and get into a deep sleep. When you wake up, before your plans and responsibilities occupy you, consider journaling for 20 min. It will give you clarity, reduce tension and improve connection during the day.
